The motto “It Beats an Oar” is inspired by my desire to remind everyone that an electric auxiliary is not the equivalent of a diesel, but it is a big step up from the sweep that was traditional with sailing yachts and fishing boats before internal combustion engines became the norm. In my youth, I spent an entire summer cruising the Nova Scotia coast in my 26’ Folkboat, with no auxiliary power other than a big oar. It worked, and I had a great summer, but the oar was a lot more cumbersome and a lot slower than my EA power.
Here is a photo of some people who are demonstrating what is possible with oars. Eight fit men have about the same horsepower as the EA motor!
