Simple, Elegant, Direct Drive

Experienced sailors know that complex systems are more prone to failure than simple ones. Internal combustion engines require transmissions to shift between forward and reverse, so there is no getting around this added element of complexity. A modern electric motor of the type used by EA (BLDC/PMAC motor, see next section) does not require a mechanical transmission because it can be reversed electronically. With this motor, a reduction gear is also entirely unnecessary. The EA motor has plenty of torque even at the lowest speeds, and it operates efficiently from the lowest to the highest speeds. The motor can thus be mated directly to the propeller shaft with no intervening gears, or belt and pulley arrangements. This improves both the efficiency and reliability of the EA system.
